Sjostrom, Joyce Angela (Swanson) (February 22, 1927 - May 18, 2010)

Joyce Angela Sjostrom, 83, Town of Hill, died Tuesday, May 18 at her home, surrounded by her family and caregiver, Claire Meyer.

Funeral services were held Saturday, May 22 at First Lutheran Church in Ogema, with Rev. Bob Giese officiating. Interment was at Garden of Memories in the Town of Hill. Pallbearers were Josiah Sjostrom, Jordan Sjostrom, Ryan Sjostrom, Tyler Sjostrom, Courtney Sjostrom, Tim Teson, Dan Teson and Kirsten Probst.


The former Joyce Swanson was born February 22, 1927 on the family homestead in the Town of Hill to the late George William and Angela (Risberg) Swanson.

She attended Ring School and was a 1945 graduate of Prentice High School. She moved to Chicago, Ill., where she was employed as a housekeeper for two years, then worked at Wrigley Gum Co. for six years.


In 1953 in Gary, Ind., she married Leonard Ernst Sjostrom, who preceded her in death in 1989.

They lived in the Chicago area where she stayed until moving back to the Ogema area in 1991.


She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Liberty Bell Homemakers, WELCA and the church quilting group. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling to visit her children, being outdoors, and the hilltop view from the highest farm in Wisconsin.


Survivors include five children, Jim (Janece) of St. Cloud, Fla., Illeane Taylor of Gram, Wash., Laurel (Bruce) Probst of Belvidere, Ill., Nelson (Cathy) of Cherry Valley, Ill., and Tim (Luanne) of St. Charles, Ill.; two brothers, George "Bud" of Ogema and Kenneth (Margie) of New Baden, Ill.; two sisters, Gladys Jensen of Ogema and Marie (Marvin) Arneson of South Range; one aunt, Betty Johnson of Prentice; 18 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews; and other relatives and friends.


In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her step-mother; and brother-in-law, Darrell Jensen in 2005.


Memorials in her honor may be given to First Lutheran Church.

Dallmann-Kniewel Funeral Homes of Medford and Rib Lake assisted the family with arrangements.
