-Mahalko, George (1911? - 24 NOV 1950)

One-half hour before the close of the 1950 deer hunting season, George Mahalko, 39, of rural Gilman was killed Friday when he was struck in the head by a bullet while he and 10 others hunted deer in Sawyer County.

Bob Zabrowski, 30, also of Gilman, told Sheriff William Sands at Hayward he was shooting at a deer and Mahalko apparently got in the line of fire.

Funeral services were held Tuesday at 9 a.m. at St. John’s Orthodox Church, Huron, the Rev. Gregory Gleboff officiating.

The deceased was born in Chippewa County and lived practically all of his life on the farm where he resided at the time of his death.

He was married to Evelyn Hodowonic who died in 1947. He married Lucille Demianiuk last year. He is also survived by four children from his first marriage and one from his second marriage.
