Smith, Fred H. Sr. (January 12, 1938 - June 3, 2011)

 

Fred H. Smith Sr., 72, Town of Holway, died on Friday, June 3 at his home, surrounded by his family and under hospice care.

 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 7 at Hemer Funeral Home in Medford, with Rev. Kris Bjerke-Ulliman officiating.


Fred Smith was born on January 12, 1938 in Hancock County, Iowa, to the late Marlor J. and Lucy (Caudell) Smith. He was a graduate of Thompson High School in Thompson, Iowa.


He married Sharon Peterson and they later divorced.

 

He married Marie Peterson and they later divorced.

 

On October 10, 1998 in Blaire, Neb., he married Latonia "Toni" J. Chenier, who survives.

 

He owned and operated a crop farm for 18 years, then sold life insurance. He also managed RV parks in Iowa and Nebraska for a number of years. In December 2005, they moved to the Town of Holway and he worked at the Dorchester Co-op. He also transported the Amish around.


He was a member of NRA. In his early years he enjoyed camping, snowmobiling, traveling to Las Vegas, Nev. to gamble, going to auctions, watching old westerns, dancing and collecting guns.


In addition to his wife, Latonia, survivors include three children, Dawn (Dave) Gilbert of Swale Dale, Iowa, Fred Allan (Dea) Jr. of Knoxville, Iowa, and Misty Smith of Monett, Mo.; three step-children, Ashley Mc Bride of Altoona, Iowa, and Steven Mc Bride and Michael Mc Bride, both of Knoxville; three sisters, Coleen (Bob) Devin of Webber Falls, Okla., Zudavee Holland of Forest City, Iowa, and Madliene (Steven) Jensen of Robin, Iowa; five grandchildren, Angela Olsson, Shelly (Jerry) Hansen and Troy Gunderson, all of Owatonna, Minn., Taylor Luncford of Monett, Mo., and Amy Gunderson of Mason City, Iowa; and six great-grandchildren.


In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Hanvord, Clifton, Cohen and Edwin, and two sisters in infancy.


In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to his family to be designated at a later date.
