Merkel, Melvin R. (8 Oct. 1914 - 3 Jan. 2002)

 

DULUTH, MINN. - Melvin “Mel” R. Merkel, 87, of Pequaywan Lake, Duluth, Minn. Died Thur., Jan. 3, 2002, in Duluth.

 

Services were held Jan. 7, 2002, in Duluth. Internment was at Park Hill Cemetery.

 

Mel was born to Ed and Katherine (McGivern) Merkel in Marshfield. He lived in Duluth since 1943. He married Florence  R. Lemke in 1938.


Mel served in the National Guard from 1935 to 1942 and served in the Civilian Conservation Corp camps in Wisconsin in 1935. He worked for Northwestern Bell for 34 years and retired in 1976. He also was a member of the Pequaywan Lake Fire Department, the Pequaywan Lake Association and the Portman Softball League.


Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Wendy (Dale) Kreager of Hermantown and Beverly Taylor of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister Joan (Harvey) Duerr of Milwaukee, a brother Robert Merkel of Marshfield; a sister-in-law Bernice Trierweiler of Marshfield; three grandsons and many nieces and nephews.
