Hertel, Gordon J. (5 Sept. 1912 - 17 May 1999)

Gordon J. Hertel, 86, of 304 Third St., Milladore, died at 8:30 a.m. May 17, 1999, at St. Joseph’s Hospital Hospice Care Unit where he was admitted the day before.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thur. at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Milladore. The Rev. John A. Wisneski, pastor, will officiate. Catherine Warnecke will be the organist for St. Wenceslaus Senior Choir.

Burial will be in St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Allen, Barry, Jason, Keith, Scott and Ron Hertel Jr. and Brian Rank.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wed. at Martens/Kundinger Funeral Home in Junction City and again from 1 p.m. until service time Thur. at the church. A St. Wenceslaus Parish Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Wed. at the funeral home.

He was born Sept. 5, 1912, in Chilton to Jacob and Elizabeth (nee Steffes) Hertel. He married Dorothy A. Wagner on Nov. 4, 1938 in Marshfield.

He moved with his parents in 1913 to Stockbridge and then to Milladore in 1929. He attended Stockbridge Elementary School and St. Norbert’s Business College in DePere. He worked with his dad and brothers in the cheese and butter business at the Milladore Creamery. Gordon spent 13 years with Service Bakery in Marshfield and then hauled bulk milk for four years. He retired as a dairy plant fieldman for the Wisconsin Central Grade “A” for 12 years.

He was a member of St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church.

He is survived by one daughter, Betty Rank of Marshfield; five sons, Robert (Ruth) Hertel of Stratford, Ronald (Shirley) Hertel of Milladore, Terrance (Jan) Hertel of Marshfield, Charles (Linda) Hertel of Auburndale and Francis (Kathy) Hertel of Marshfield; 14 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, William (Patricia) Hertel of New Port Richey, Fla., and James Hertel of Milladore; three sisters, Sister Ramona Hertel, OFS of Milwaukee, Sister Muriel Hertel, OFS of Milwaukee, and Marie Cherney of Wisconsin Rapids.

He was preceded in death by his wife on May 23, 1981; two sons, Allen Hertel on March 11, 1971, and Thomas Hertel on Nov. 25, 1972; his parents, four brothers, Anthony Hertel, Francis Hertel, Brother Norbert Hertel SVD, and Leo Hertel.
