Game Warden Ben Lanning was here from Black River Falls Saturday, and upon
information furnished him by George Hart, found the carcass of a deer in the
woods of the town of Hewett (Clark Co., Wis.). A warrant was issued for
Charles Ehlert of Columbia and Mr. Ehlert came to town Monday and put in his
appearance at court. He admits having shot the deer, but stated that when
first seen, the deer had been badly wounded by someone else, that one of his
legs was broken, and as it would have died soon anyhow, he told his son to
shoot it in order to put it out of its misery. Mr. Ehlert is a substantial
farmer of the Columbia country and well known as a reliable and
conscientious man, and his story evidently impressed the Game Warden and the
District Attorney, for they are making an investigation of the case and
deferred a hearing until the 15th. Mr. Lanning shipped the carcass of the
deer to Madison on Monday.
