Charles Schutz will be one of three military veterans honored for years of service by the Neillsville Legion. Schutz was born in Elgin, ND. His family moved to Wisconsin in 1957 while he was in third grade. After finishing grade school, he graduated from Neillsville High School in 1967.

After graduation, Schutz worked at Holiday until he joined the Navy in May 1968.

Schutz had basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center in Illinois. He attended Class A and Class P School for aviation fuel on land and on a carrier at Lakehurst, N.J., and then attended firefighting school in Philadelphia, PA.

Schutz then was transferred to the Naval Air Station Alameda in Alameda, CA, to be an instructor in automotive machines. He worked on cars with various needs ranging from a minor tune-up to a major overhaul.

After his time in Alameda, Schutz was transferred to the Naval Air Station Fallon in Churchill County, NV, where he became a section leader in the fuels division. In this position, he was responsible to get fuel to aircraft and base vehicles in a timely manner.

Schutz was discharged in May 1972.

After his discharge, Schutz built a house on Fairground Avenue just outside Neillsville and has lived there ever since. He started working at Nelson Muffler in July 1972 and later took a job at Cummins. He retired from Cummins in February 2006.

Schutz married his wife, Barbara, in 1990. They have one daughter, Melissa.

Schutz has several hobbies, including deer hunting and woodworking. He likes to work on kitchen and gun cabinets, bathroom vanities and bedroom furniture.

The recognition will take place this Monday, Aug. 5, at the American Legion Post 73, 6 Boulevard, Neillsville. There will be a social hour at 4:30 p.m. and a potluck at 5:30 p.m. Schutz will be honored along with Dennis and Edgar Eddy.
