Approximately 240 received degrees last week from the University of Wisconsin, Stevens Point.

The ceremonies marked the close of the university’s 69th annual summer session. Robert Worth, president of the Worth Company of Stevens Point – Whiting and head of the UW-Stevens Point Foundation, Inc., was the speaker.

Among those receiving degrees was Bruce Castner, Route 2, Colby. Who received a Bachelor’s degree.

Kowalk, Otto and Mabel (Gold – 9 Aug 1977)

Mr. and Mrs. Otto Kowalk celebrated their golden wedding Sunday at Anchor Inn Resort, Turtle Lake. About 200 friends and relatives attended the open house.

Otto Kowalk and Mabel Quist were married August 9, 1927 at Zion Lutheran Church, Colby, with Reverend Kerchoefer officiating. Bridal attendants were (?) Baumgart, sister of the bride, and Clara Eder, sister of the groom, Herbert (?) and the late William Schwocho, Wausau friends of the bride and groom.

For the occasion, the center piece on the table featured a large wedding cake with gold roses. The top decorations were on the cake of their marriage. It was used again in 1952 for their silver.

The cake was cut and served by Char Martens and Jean Michaleski, Marshfield. The guest book was handled by Dorothy Baumgart and Betty Beguhn.

Special instrumental music and singing was by the Sill brothers, Norman and Paul, Racine.

Mr. and Mrs. Kowalk farmed near Colby before moving to Owen in 1947. There they were employed by the Lehnen family at the Woodland Hotel.

They are now retired and living in Owen in the winter. The summers are spent at their cottage on Upper Turtle Lake.

They have two nieces, Arlyle Katt and Betty Beguhn, and one nephew, Duane Baumgart.

This year’s 2023 Greenwood School District Homecoming Grand Marshals were Dale and Michelle Walde.

Dale and Michelle grew up in Greenwood, where they became high school sweethearts. Dale was a 1990 state football champ while Michelle was on the sidelines as a cheerleader and a state qualifier for volleyball her senior year. A couple of years went by and they had two children, Bryce and Britney. Bryce, 23, is a graduate of Winona State University and Britney is a senior at Greenwood High School. “(My parents) always have open arms and welcome people into their home,” Britney wrote. “They have held team meals and team bonding, while making locker decorations and helping out with Booster Club and other school activities while both of their children were in school. “You can always come to them and ask them for help with anything.”

The seven annual Dommer family reunion was held at Cherokee Park August 14 1977.

A pot luck dinner was served at noon. After a brief meeting, the afternoon was spent visiting and playing bingo.

Grandparents are Mrs. Agnes Bartnik, Colby, and Mr. and Mrs. Richard Herrmann, Colby. Great-grandparents are Mrs. Esther Meinke, Unity, and Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Martens, Abbotsford, and a great-great-grandmother, Mrs. Ida Patitz, Abbotsford.

Sister Theresa Geiger was guest of honor August 7, 1977 at a family gathering in observance of her 25th anniversary as a nun.

The festivities began with a Mass at St. Louis Catholic Church, Dorchester, at noon, with the Rev. James Wolf, Detroit, as celebrant. He is a cousin of Sister Theresa.

Two classmates also participated in the Mass. They were Sister Barbarina Jantsch, formerly of Dorchester, and Sister Helen Schrauth.

Ricky T. Busse, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Busse, Dorchester, has been chosen as one of four farm youths to receive a Production Credit Association (PCA) of Neillsville scholarship award.

Ricky, who graduated in May from Colby High School, will be attending the North Central Technical Institute (NCTI) this fall.
