Schwantes, Martha (8 Oct. 1883 - 7 Mar. 1965)

Spencer - Mrs. Martha Schwantes, 81, Spencer, died Sunday at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Spencer. The Rev. W. R. Krueger will officiate and burial will be made in the church cemetery.

The body will repose at the Jasperson Funeral Home in Spencer from Tuesday evening until time of services.

The former Martha Mellenthin was born Oct. 8, 1883, in the town of Unity, and received her education there. Her marriage to Ferdinand Schwantes, who preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1937, took place Nov. 14, 1901, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in North Spencer.

After their marriage they lived on a farm in the town of Brighton, Marathon County, until 1935, when they moved to Spencer. Since 1957 she had resided at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen. Mrs. Schwantes was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Ferdinand (Esther) Kopp and Mrs. Leo (Evelyn) Klein, Marshfield; Mrs. Albert (Adelia) Schultz, Spencer; Mrs. Arden (Erna) Douglas, Milwaukee; and Mrs. Oscar (Viola) Carlson, Unity; two sons, Arthur and Herbert Schwantes, Spencer; two sisters, Mrs. William Ewald, Spencer; and Mrs. Anna Schultz, Milwaukee; two brothers, Otto Mellenthin, Marshfield; and Arthur Mellenthin, Spencer; 14 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three brothers and a sister.
