Clark County-UW-River Falls (Enrollment 1985)

The final enrollment figure for fall quarter at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls is 5,284, according to Richard Kathan, assistant to the registrar.

Area students attending the university this year are Stephanie A. Stuve, Humbird; Kristin A. Heineck, Dale I. Mitte, and Dean A. Wetzel, all of Neillsville.

Clark County-UW-Stevens Point (Enrollment - 1985)

The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point has the largest enrollment in its history this fall—about 9,500 students.

Enrollment this fall was nearly 500 over one hear ago. Clark County-UW-Stout (Enrollment - 1985)

Five Neillsville area residents are enrolled this fall at UW-Stout. They are Douglas Selbach and Darin Garbisch, Granton, both majoring in industrial technology; James Krueger, Granton, majoring in applied mathematics; and Jeffery Kluckhohn and Dennis Schmidt, both majoring in technology education.

With an enrollment of approximately 7,700, Stout is a “special mission” university in the UW system. Founded in 1893, it retains its original primary mission of preparing men and women for careers. Because of this, the university continues to have a job placement record of better than 90 percent for its graduates.

Portz, Harry L. (1 September 1900 – 29 October 1985)

Eighty-five year old Harry L. Portz, a Neillsville Memorial Home resident, died Tuesday, October 29, at Memorial Hospital.

Mr. Portz, born at Waukesha on September 1, 1900, was the son of Herman and Josephine (Nix) Portz. His education was received in Clark County schools and the University of Wisconsin short farm course. During the past thirty years he farmed in the Town of Lynn. Prior to that he had lived on a farm in the Town of Fremont, and worked as a logger. Following his move to Neillsville in 1981, he entered the Memorial Home in 1983.

Surviving him is a sister, Mrs. David (Mabel) Gallagher, Neillsville. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Ellis; and a sister, Mrs. Erwin (Dorothy) Haslow.

Rev. Calvin Carey and Rev. Howard Ott officiated at funeral services held November 1, at United Methodist Church, Chili. Interment was in United Methodist Cemetery, Chili, and pallbearers were William Townsend, Kenneth Haslow, Robert Reitz, Dennis Naedler, Thomas Gallagher and Eugene Cattanach. Gilbertson Funeral Home, Granton, was in charge of arrangements.

Potts, Leah H. (20 November 1892 – 26 September 1985)

Funeral services for Lela H. Potts, 92, were held Monday, September 30, in Belle Plaine, Iowa. Rev. Robert Barnett, of Christ United Methodist Church, officiated and burial was in Winslow Cemetery, rural Belle Plaine. Pallbearers were Duane Selk and Bob Selk, Rod and Jeff Svoboda, Russ Roberts, and Dennis Nielsen.

A long-time Belle Plaine resident, Mrs. Potts died Thursday, September 26, at St. Luke’s Hospital, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Born November 20, 1892, at Salt Creek Township, Tama County, she was the daughter of Elvin and Mary (Winslow) Rote. After graduating from Belle Plaine High School, she taught in rural area schools. On February 19, 1914, she married Floyd Potts, at the home of her grandparents in Walnut Creek. After farming for a time in Iowa County, they moved to Greenwood; and after retiring, they resided in Neillsville. Her husband passed away on December 24, 1972, and Mrs. Potts then returned to Iowa.

Tessman, Harold H. (3 March 1917 – 15 October 1985)

Services for Harold H. Tessman, 65, of Rt. 5 Neillsville, were Friday, October 18, 1985, at 1:00 p.m. in Ninneman-Steele Funeral Home, Tomah. He had died Tuesday, October 15, in Neillsville Memorial Hospital. The Rev. Richard Weber officiated, and burial was in the Wood Cemetery, Valley Junction.

He was born March 3, 1917, in Bangor to Max and Dora (Meyer) Tessman. On April 17, 1942, he married Lotis Chambers, in Tomah. He was employed in the maintenance division of Moline Corporation, Belvidere, Illinois, until he retired in 1979.

Survivors are his wife, two sons, Harold “Rick” of Neillsville and Larry of Greenwood; four sisters, Hazel Busse of Melrose, Doris Beardsley, Lois Phillips and Shirley Farel, all of Belvidere; two brothers, Wilbur of Tomah and Robert of Belvidere; and ten grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter and three sisters.

Wagener, Rita G. (? – 2 November 1985)

Mrs. Vincent (Rita G.) Wagener, 66, Rt. 1, Augusta, sister of Lyman Heidemann of Greenwood, and Norman Heidemann of Thorp, died Saturday, November 2, at Sacred Heart Hospital, in Eau Claire.

She was born in Reseburg, and was married to Vincent Wagener February 16, 1939, in Stanley. She was a former officer of the Augusta Women’s Club.

Surviving besides her husband are six daughters, Paula Malone, Fargo, N.D.; Gloria Krueger, of Horicon; Sister Judy Wagener, of Milwaukee; Rosemary Moe, of Minneapolis, MN; Irene Mackie of Madison; Anne Hitz, of Minneapolis, MN; three sons, Peter of Rochester, MN; Steve of Eau Claire; and Tom of Madison; a sister, Teckla Anderson, of Madison; a brother, William of Rockford, Ill.; sixteen grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, November 5 at St. Olaf’s Church, in Eau Claire. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery, Eau Claire. Prock Funeral Home of Eau Claire was in charge of arrangements.

Wegner, Marie (10 August 1905 – 31 October 1985)

Neillsville resident, Mrs. Walter (Merie) Wegner, died suddenly Thursday, October 31, at the age of eighty. She passed away in the emergency room of the Neillsville Memorial Hospital.

Born August 10, 1905, in the Town of Hewett, she was the daughter of Charles and Louise (Rose) Ehlert. She attended school in the Columbia area. On October 1, 1924, she married Walter C. Wegner, at Neillsville.

They farmed in the Globe area of the Town of Weston for several years. Moving to Loyal, they owned and operated a tavern for eighteen years. After retirement, they resided for a time at Hayward. For the past fifteen years, they have made their home in Neillsville

Surviving are her husband, and one sister. Preceding her in death were her parents, four brothers, and one sister.

Gesche Funeral Home handled arrangements and visitation was one hour prior to the 3:30 p.m. services held Saturday, November 2. Rev. Paul Forde officiated, and burial was in the Neillsville City Cemetery. Pallbearers were friends and relatives of the deceased.

Zerbel, Herman R. (25 January 1920 – 11 October 1985)

Sixty-five year old Herman R. Zerbel, formerly of Humbird, died Friday, October 11, at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. He had been a resident of the care center since 1961, and passed away followi9ng a lingering illness.

Mr. Zerbel was born January 25, 1920, at the town of Mentor to Paul and Frieda (Schenk) Zerbel. After receiving his education at the Houghtonburg School, in the Town of Alma, Jackson County, he farmed for many years, in the Humbird area, with his parents.

Surviving are three sisters, Mrs. LaVerne (Alma) Kaufman, Fairchild, Mrs. DeWayne (Lorraine) Schweinler, Mauston, Mrs. John (Doris) Kleckner, Lancaster; and two brothers, Art and Donald Zerbel, both of Humbird. He was predeceased by his parents.

Rev. Howard Ott conducted funeral services held Monday, October 14, at Gesche Funeral Home, Neillsville. Burial was at the Town of Mentor Cemetery, Humbird. Relatives of the deceased served as pallbearers.

Granton FFA Grabs Top Honors (Quiz Bowl - 1985)

Granton FFA members captured top honors in the second annual pork quiz bowl held this past weekend at the Northway Mall in Marshfield, which was sponsored by the Central Wisconsin Pork Producers Club. Members of the Granton team were John Garbisch, Dale Nickel, Darryl Hasz and Kent and Eric Eibergen. Granton beat out nine other schools that had entered the contest.

Granton FFA also won top honors in the booth that they constructed in the mall which featured the breeds of swine. The next event for the Granton FFA swine exhibitors will be a meeting of the Northwest Jr. Livestock Show to be held on Tuesday evening, October 22, at the Osseo High School.
