GEORGE W. REAY, contractor and painter was born in Staffordshire, England, in city of Wasil, Dec. 8, 1836. He arrived in Baltimore, Md., May 16, 1844, and remained there until the Rebellion broke out, when he was obliged to leave on account of his Union sentiments. He walked fifty-eight miles through the Rebel country into our lines. In a short time he was commissioned by the Regular Army officers to raise volunteers. He enlisted in Co. G, 3rd Md. Vol. He acted as first lieutenant two years and was discharged for physical disability. He recruited another company of home guards and was elected Captain and served sixty days. He was elected president of the Hancock Iron and Steel Co., in which capacity he remained a year. He came to Wausau in 1876. He has been married three times.
