Richard Franz Adolph Schreiber (13 Dec 1884 - 8 Feb 1961)

Funeral rites for Richard Schreiber, were held Feb. 13 in Eilvese, Germany. That is the residence of his sister, Martha Schreiber Huebner, whom he was visiting at the time of his death Feb. 8. His son Alfred H. of this community (Dorchester, Clark Co., WI) went to Eilvese Feb. 10 to attend the services. He is expected to return soon.

Mr. Richard Schreiber went to Germany on May 28 of last year to visit his sister and other relatives. He later changed his plans, extending his stay through the winter months. He was taken ill Jan. 31, and died in a hospital Feb. 8. Death was ascribed to a diabetic condition which he had suffered a number of years.

Richard Schreiber was born in (Holzdorf), Germany on 13 December 1882 (year in error, immigration record & headstone correctly state 1884), and came to this country at the age of 27. He located in this community, and in 1912 bought the Cash Star Meat Market, a business he was active in until about four years ago.

He and his family developed the original butcher shop into a modern self-service market in groceries and meats during the nearly half-century of operation. A new store building
was erected in 1942, after the original building was razed by fire. The new store was remodeled about 10 years ago. A locker plant was added to the business in 1941.

On April 1, 1946, his son David, upon completion of war service with the Marine Corps, joined him in the business, and they operated it until October of 1957, when they discontinued the store and locker plant to concentrate their attention on their manufacture of sausage. They continued wholesale handling of fresh meats and sausages. They discontinued all operations in the summer of 1958.

Mr. Schreiber and Selma Paul were married here Sept. 11, 1918. She died May 4, 1953. Surviving are three sons and two daughters: David, West Allis; Donald Colby, Alfred, of this community; Pearl (Mrs. Ray Ziegman), Lorain, Ohio; Bernice (Mrs. Donald Koenig), Marshfield; 25 grandchildren; and the sister, Martha, in Germany.

Mr. Schreiber left from the home of his father, Franz Schreiber in Waldenburg, Lower Silesia, Prussia, Germany (now Walbrzych, Poland), then boarded the SS Brandenburg at Bremen and traveled in 1st class; departing on 21 Jun 1912, he arrived at Baltimore MD, 06 Jul 1912. Described as a single male, age 27, 5'6", fair complected, with blond hair and brown eyes, occupation butcher, able to read and write, intended to meet his Uncle Heinrich (Henry) Hagen in Dorchester, WI.

US State Department, Report of the Death of an American Citizen, 27 Feb 1961, US Consulate Hamburg Germany, states:

Dr. Hess, house physician of the Neustadt am Ruebenberge District Hospital certified cause of death as heart failure; death occurred at 4:20 a.m., 8 Feb 1961; burial took place at the Eilvese Cemetery, Lot #159, Neustadt/Ruebenberge District, Lower Saxony, Germany; personal effects in custody of son Alfred H. Schreiber, copies of report sent to son Alfred H. Schreiber and sister Martha Schreiber Huebner.
