Edith Sturner (5 Jun 1885 – 11 Mar 1953)

Mrs. John V. Sturner, 68, of Bruce, suffered a fatal heart attack in St. Mary’s hospital, Ladysmith, at 6:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 11. Mrs. Sturner, a former resident of the village (Dorchester, Clark Co., WI) and a sister of Mrs. M. J. Weix, entered the hospital about three weeks ago for surgery, from which she was recovering when the heart condition developed, with a first attack coming about a week ago.

Funeral services will be held from the McElravy Funeral Home, Ladysmith, at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, and interment will be beside her husband in Pine Tree cemetery, Curtiss. The Rev. Elmer E. Prenzlow, Cornell, will officiate at the services in Ladysmith and at the cemetery, where the casket will be opened prior to the committal rites. Harlow Klund, Henry Laux, Charles Minich, Harry Flater, Gordon Heuer, and Andrew Germaine will serve as pallbearers. All are from the Bruce area.

Edith Lapp was born June 5, 1885, in the Curtiss community, where she grew to womanhood, attending Curtiss schools and the Medford high school. She was married to John V. Sturner at Curtiss on April 5, 1903, and moved here, where she and her husband owned and operated a feed warehouse. In 1915 they sold the local business, and moved to Curtiss, where they purchased another feed business and a general store. She had charge of operating the store until they sold that business in 1928, and moved to the Holcombe area.

There they bought land on the Chippewa river, and through the years developed Sturner’s Resort, which they operated until retiring four years ago. Since that time she had resided near Bruce, where Mr. Sturner died Oct. 1, 1951.

Mrs. Sturner was a member of the Lutheran church, and served actively in its Ladies’ Aid, and the Bruce Civic Club. She also participated actively in a resort owner’s association. Her many years in the store and resort business made her many friends, and she was admired and respected by all who knew her.

Two sisters survive: Mrs. M. J. (Vera) Weix, Dorchester, and Mrs. Fred (Verna) Rasman, Antigo. Two daughters, Waunetta and Gladys, preceded her in death, as did also three sisters and a brother.
