David O. Carlson, 76, Abbotsford, passed away on Thursday, April 11, 2013, at the Just Like Home Assisted Living Facility in Colby.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, May 3, 2013, at the First Presbyterian Church in Abbotsford. Reverend Marcia Thomas will officiate. Visitation will be from 10:30 until time of service at the church on Friday and following the service a light lunch will be served at the church. David was born to Oscar and Viola (Schwantes) Carlson on April 11, 1937, at the family farm in Brighton Township, Marathon County. He attended Romeo Grade School and Unity and Colby High Schools. David graduated from Colby High School in 1955. Following graduation, David served in the United States Army including at a station in Germany.

David was an avid sports participant and fan throughout his life. He played varsity high school basketball and baseball and, as an adult, enjoyed umpiring and watching local sporting events in the Unity, Colby and Abbotsford area. He also cheered on the Badgers and the Packers.

David excelled at his role as “Uncle Dave” to his Alaska and Minnesota nieces and nephew, visiting when he could and sending practical gifts for the holidays. While working at ‘Oshkosh B’ Gosh’ he decided the Alaskan nieces and nephew should have insulated overalls. They were thrilled with “Uncle Dave’s” present.

He is survived by his brothers, Robert (Cam) Carlson of Fairbanks, Ala., and Douglas Joe (Rita) Carlson of Hastings, Minn.; Robert and Cam’s children, Kris (Dean Bumstead) Carlson of Bellingham, Wash., Brett (Jillian Simpson) Carlson of Anchorage, Ala., and Kelly (David) Guarino of Carlisle, Mass.; Joe and Rita’s children, Cassie (Paul) Bjorkstrand, Sam Carlson, and Jessie Carlson all of the Hastings, Minn., area; and grandnieces and nephew, Anna Stringham, Xan Carlson and Devon Bumstead.

David is preceded in death by his parents.

David and his family greatly appreciated; the extended Carlson and Schwantes families for including Dave in their family gatherings; the Abbotsford Lions Club and Jim Schiferl including him in their club activities, Matt Dietrich for his help and friendship; Bonnie Christner for her help and friendship and especially, Eunice Kleparski and the staff of Just Like Home for their outstanding care of Dave during his illness.

The Maurina-Schilling Funeral Home in Abbotsford is assisting the family with arrangements.
