Stapel, Paul M. (18 JUN 1874 - 27 JUN 1952)

Paul Max Stapel, son of Mr. and Mrs. Christian Stapel, was born June 18, 1874 in Germany, and came to the United States at the age of fourteen.

On April 5, 1897 he was united in marriage to Miss Clara Dahlstrom at Winnebago, Minn. They resided there for fourteen years, coming to Wisconsin and settling at Fenwood, where they operated a store for ten years, and at Winchester for six years. They then resided on a farm near Longwood (Clark Co.) and retired in 1943, coming to Greenwood where they have since resided.

Mr. Stapel passed away at his home here on Friday, June 27, 1952, having reached the age of 78 years and 9 days. He has been ill for the past year and underwent an operation at St. Joseph's Hospital a few months ago.

Funeral services were held at Our Savior's Luther Church at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1st. The Rev. M.S. Egge officiated and he was laid to rest in Riverside Cemetery at Withee.

During the service Mrs. Otto Voie sang "Softly and Tenderly" and Walter Needham and daughter Janet sang "Softly and Tenderly(??)," accompanied by Mr. Don Warner at the organ.

Mr. Stapel is survived by his wife, three sons, Justin P., Oakland Calif.; Theodore, Elmhurst, Ill.; and Robert in the armed forces; and three daughters, Mrs. J.B. (Mildred) McCallum, Elmhurst, Ill.; Mrs. Ed (Florence) Frickenstein, Edgar; and Mrs. Ralph (Charlotte) Miller, Withee; and fifteen grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three sons.

The pallbearers were Alvin Thorson, Einar Jackson, Melvin Erickson, Walter Needham, Calvin Franz, Charles Markee.

Those in charge of flowers were Mrs. Walter Needham, Janet Needham, Bonnie Miller, and Joanne Jackson.
