Schoengarth, Edward (1 NOV 1881 – 17 Jul 1916)

Monday morning about 8:30 o’clock, Edw. Schoengarth committed suicide by shooting himself through the head in a fit of temporary mental derangement. Ed. had been in poor health for several months and had been doctoring for stomach trouble and had even been to Milwaukee to consult a specialist. His parents supposed that his stomach trouble was but temporary and that he would eventually recover, but in a note found by his mother, Ed. stated that some years ago he had been kicked in the stomach during a football game and that this had caused a cancer and he was suffering intense pain continually. He had not been at work for several days and for several nights had not been able to sleep with the result that his mind gave way under the strain of worrying over his physical condition.

Ed. was born in Neillsville to Mr. and Mrs. Aug. Schoengarth on Nov. 1, 1881. He attended the public schools, graduated from the high school and attended the state university for a time. Fourteen years ago he entered the Commercial State Bank in the capacity of a bookkeeper and at the time of his death was assistant cashier. His accounts here were at all times errorless for he was careful and painstaking in all his work. His personal faults were immeasurably overshadowed by his better qualities and Ed. was held in the very highest esteem in this community and his untimely death was a matter of sincere regret. He was serving the 3rd Ward as alderman on the city council. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity and the funeral was held under the direction of his brethren yesterday afternoon. Services were conducted by Rev. Longenecker at the house and interment was made in the Neillsville Cemetery. Deceased is survived by his parents and one brother, County Judge O.W. Schoengarth.
