Dixon, Lorraine (Gored by Cow – 15 Jul 1916)

Little 7-year-old Lorraine Dixon, living on the Dixon farm west of the city, in the town of Sherwood, Clark County, was attacked by a cow on the farm Saturday evening and seriously hurt. The wounds she received are not as bad as first supposed and Dr. Beyer, the attending surgeon, holds that she will suffer no bad results of the goring.

It seems a mother cow was trying to be induced to feed another and orphan calf. She disliked this and the little girl, the last time older persons about saw her, was switching the cow in an effort to make her allow the second calf to get its supper.

A scream called the brother and sister, Martin and Mayme Dixon, who are running the farm, to the scene in time to see the little girl tossed up in the air by the cow. They drove the animal away and rescued the little lady. It was found on examination that the cow’s horn had punctured the little girl’s body and fears were entertained that some of the vital organs of the body might have been penetrated. Neighbors and friends of the young people were solicitous in their aid and sympathies and the arrival of the doctor and his examination dispelled all chances of internal injuries. An incision of about an inch and a half had been made in the side and this was closed with two stitches.
