Mary Peterson Johnson, a daughter of Elias and Andrea Peterson, was born February 25, 1862 near Trondhjem, Norway and passed away March 19, 1940 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Walter Hubble, at the age of 78 years and 24 days.

She lived in Norway until she was 11 years old when she came to America with her uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Ole Peterson, her parents having come before. She arrived in Neillsville on July 4, 1873 and came immediately to her parents at Greenwood where she attended school and grew to womanhood. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was faithful all her life.

On April 6, 1879 she was married to Simon B. Johnson of Greenwood. They immediately settled on the old homestead now known at the Annie Dyre farm, northeast of Greenwood, where they lived for three years when they moved to the adjoining farm which has since been her home. Two sons and six daughters came to bless their home. One son, Severin and two daughters, Helga, Mrs. Ed Peterson and Serina, the former Mrs. Lee Jolivette preceded her in death. Mr. Johnson also preceded her on Marcy 21, 1917.

Those who are left to mourn are Mrs. Josephine Hubble, Mrs. P.M. (Amanda) Johnson and Leonard of Greenwood; Mrs. David (Selma) Gustafson of Chicago and Mrs. Sigward (Olga) Johnson of Loyal. There are 19 grandchildren; one brother P.E. Peterson; two sisters, Mrs. Annie Dyre and Mrs. Wm. Hogue all of Greenwood, besides a host of other relatives and a wide circle of friends.

Mrs. Johnson took an active part in the church and social activities of her community, she being a charter member of Trondhjem Lutheran Church and the firs president of the Ladies Aid of that church. She also served as treasurer of the Ladies Aid for a number of years.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, March 23, 1940 from her old home and Trondhjem Church with burial in Greenwood Cemetery, Rev. M.K. Aaberg officiating.

Relatives from away who attended the funeral were Mrs. David Gustafson, Chicago and Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hogue of Merrillan.

Six grandchildren had charge of the flowers, Joyce Johnson, Elaine Jolivette, Ila Johnson, Vera Johnson, Calvin Johnson and Dale Jolivette.

Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Knudtson and daughter, Nadine, sang “What a Friend We Have In Jesus” at the home and “In the Sweet Bye and Bye” (in Norse), “It is well With My Soul” and “Abide With Me” at the church accompanied by Mrs. Aaberg at the piano.
