Stendel, Mathilda A. (Meyer) (31 JAN 1921 - 3 APR 2014)

Mathilda A. Stendel, 93, of Menomonie, formerly of Jump River, died on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at her daughter's home, under the care of Mayo Clinic-Hospice.

She was born on January 31, 1921 in Jump River, the daughter of Martin and Anna (Vagts) Meyer. She attended Pioneer Elementary and Hannibal High School. Tillie continued her education at the Taylor County Teacher's College and later received a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, going on to a career in teaching at the Gilman School District.

Tillie was united in marriage to Gerald "Fritz" Stendel in 1947, and they farmed in the Jump River area until retirement. Mathilda was an active member of the New Hope Presbyterian Church, Ladies Auxiliary, VRW and Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed reading, playing cards, visiting with friends and family, and traveling.

Mathilda is survived by her daughter, Nancy Herrick of Menomonie; a son, Fred (Karen) Stendel of Jump River; five grandchildren, Jamie (Nikki) Herrick, Patrick (Heather) Herrick, Scott Herrick, Eric (Dawn) Stendel and Erin (Joseph) Hattamer; and six great-grandchildren, Michael and Christian Herrick, Mia, Chelsea and Ali Herrick, and Amelia Hattamer. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Gerald "Fritz"; brothers, Claus and Henry; and sisters, Dora Kochevar and Marie Gordon.

Memorials services will be held on Wednesday, April 9 at 11 a.m. New Hope Presbyterian Church in Hannibal, with Pastor Barry Boyer officiating. Inurnment will take place at a later date at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Jump River. Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the church. Plombon Funeral Service assisted the family with arrangements.
