Miskanis, Nioma A. (24 FEB 1931 – 16 AUG 2014)

Nioma A. Miskanis, 83, Owen, passed away on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2014, at the Clark County Health Care Center, Owen. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m., on Saturday, Aug. 23, at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Withee. Rev. Tom Myhre will officiate. A visitation will be held at the church on Saturday from 10 a.m., until the time of the service. Inurnment will take place at Riverside Cemetery in Withee following the service.

Nioma Turenne was born on Feb. 24, 1931, in Thorp, to Peter and Houlda (nee Meyer) Turenne. She attended a Catholic grade school in Chicago until eighth grade. Nioma did manufacturing work and was a butcher’s assistant in Chicago. She married Robert Miskanis on Oct. 12, 1951, in Chicago. Together the couple moved to a farm in the town of Longwood, Clark County, near Owen, in 1976 and farmed until 1998. Nioma enjoyed animals of all kinds, and cooking and canning. Her home was always open to all and served as a refuge from the city for many family members. She was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Withee and its Ladies Aid.

She is lovingly survived by her five grandchildren, Robert (Beki) Miskanis, Chippewa Falls, Katy (Mike) Shoup, Marathon City, Sarah Miskanis, Marshfield, Laura (Doug) Arthur, Sheboygan, and Amanda Miskanis, Stratford; her great-grandchildren, Logan, Sophia, Samuel and Brenna; a daughter-in-law, Betsy (Brent) Shoup, Neillsville; her siblings, Glen Turenne, Bernice Turenne and Inez Haas; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.

Nioma was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Robert Miskanis; her three children, David Miskanis, Keith Miskanis and Debbie Miskanis; and her siblings, Alice Gdula, Bud Turenne, Harvey Turenne, Violet Hendricks, Orma Lorbeck, Verna Grabowski, Erna Turenne, Frieda Dumalski and Louis Turenne.
