Jahr, Walter (14 July 1899 - 21 January 1973)

Funeral services are to be held at 1:30 p.m. today (Thursday) from the Georgas Funeral Home for Walter Jahr, 73, of Neillsville, who was found dead in his home on Court Street Sunday morning. The Rev. Melvin Nickel of the United Methodist Church will officiate, and burial will be made in the Town of Grant Cemetery.

Among other activities, Walter Jahr was employed as a custodian at the First Church of Christ Scientist, Neillsville authorities were asked to investigate when church-goers discovered that the usual janitorial tasks had not been tended to. The body of Mr. Jahr was found fully clothed in the bathroom of his home. Lights were on in the house and the building was cold when entered. Authorities theorize that death had occurred from 24 to 36 hours previously. Neighbors recalled seeing Mr. Jahr, who had never married and lived alone, outside on Friday.

Mr. Jahr, the son of Emil and Lena (Steuerwald) Jahr, was born July 14, 1899, in the Town of Grant, and received his early education there. He graduated from Neillsville high School and attended the University of Illinois at Champaign. A veteran of World War II, he enlisted in the Army August 14, 1942, as was discharged January 18, 1945, at Ft. Sheridan. Mr. Jahr had been employed by the city of Neillsville and worked as a custodian and maintenance man at the Neillsville Public Library, the First Church of Christ Scientist, and the Peterson building.

Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Elsie Raine of Appleton and Mrs. Myra Garrett of Minquadale, Del.
