Zimmerman, Max (16 OCT 1895 – 19  Jun 1918)

Max Zimmerman, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Zimmerman, died on  June 19th at Camp Dodge. He was a member of the 350th Ambulance Corps and the remains were brought to this city on Saturday in the care of Sergt. Davis. Max was born at Barre, N.Y. on Oct. 16, 1895, and had lived with his parents here for a number of years. He had demonstrated his sterling worth and integrity at all times and was a general favorite among the young people. When the United States entered the war, he tried on two separate occasions to enlist, but was rejected both times on account of physical disability. However, he attained his desire through the draft and was taken into the army on September 18, 1917, and stationed at Camp Dodge. In February he entered the hospital for treatment for eczema and later contracted mumps. He was getting along nicely on his way to recovery when he became ill with pneumonia. He was a very sick boy, but when his mother went to his bedside seven weeks ago, he apparently rallied and was up and about for a few days. But his constitution could not stand the drain it had been called upon to sustain, and he passed away to his higher reward on  June 19. He performed his duty to the best of his ability and served his country in spirit if not in actual battle, and died as a true soldier.

Max is survived by his parents, three sisters and one brother. The sisters are Miss Gretchen and Miss Gertrude Zimmerman, and Mrs. W.M. Goldamer. The brother is Arthur Zimmerman. On Sunday a military funeral was held for the young man, services being conducted by Rev. Grether at the German Reformed Church. Interment was made at the Neillsville Cemetery and a long procession of sorrowing friends followed the young soldier to the grave. The Home Guards furnished a military escort and firing squad.
