Members of Henry Wollum’s family joined him last Friday and also Saturday to help him observe his 93rd birthday anniversary. His daughter Judy, Mrs. John Sabol was here all week with him, then on Friday Mr. and Mrs. Bill Wollum of Eagle River, Mr. and Mrs. Joel Wollum of Strum and Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Wollum of Fond du Lac, Mrs. Prudence Turney, Owen, Mr. and Mrs. John Taylor of Wheaten Illinois, and John Sabol joined in his birthday dinner party. On Saturday they were joined by the Sabols’ son, John II and his friend Debbie Davie of Itasca.

The Marking family gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Rabska from Friday to Monday for a family reunion which, with the lovely war weather proved to be one of the best they have held.

(Too many people to mention were in attendance)

All meals from Friday to Monday were prepared by Ms. Dorothy Rabska and served in the nice large quarter garage on picnic tables, room for everyone.

Wolfram, Arthur A. (12 Jul 1888 – 9 Aug 1978)

The Owen community was saddened at the death of one of the pioneer residents of the community, Arthur A. Wolfram, who died at 3:50 a.m. Wednesday, August 9, 1978 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley.

Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, August 11, 1978 at the United Church of Christ in Owen, with the pastor, Rev. Loren Swanson officiating. Burial followed in Riverside Cemetery at Withee.

Pallbearers were Richard Myhre, Timothy Erickson, Rick Erickson, David Wolfram, Robert Beeley and John Craig.

The organist for the funeral services was Miss Connie Wagner, and the vocalist was Mrs. Louise Luedke of Withee.

Arthur (Art) A. Wolfram, who was 89 at the time of his death, had been a resident of this city most of his adult life, living for 60 years on Third Street, and the past three years in the Owen Heights Apartments.

He was born on July 12, 1889 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, and was educated there. After his education he moved to Amery, Wisconsin, where he met and married the former Edith Myhre on June 27, 1916, in St. Paul, Minnesota. They moved to Ladysmith and then he worked in a lumber camp near Merrill until 1918, when they moved to Owen.

In Owen, Mrs. Wolfram worked for the Owen Canning factory for several years. From 1921 to 1935 he was a clerk for the Soo Line Railroad, and then was employed by Western Condensary Company until he retired at the age of 71 in 1959.

Mr. Wolfram was well known in the community for his collection of Indian artifacts, mounted butterflies and moths. His collection of Indian arrow and spear heads was extensive and was featured several years ago in an Owen Enterprise article.

Mr. Wolfram is survived by his son, Roger Wolfram of Eau Claire, a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Erickson of Stoughton, Wisconsin, a sister, Mrs. Lillian Knabe of Sheboygan; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, on March 2, 1969, one daughter, Virginia in 1931 and two brothers.

Opening this Thursday, August 24, 1978, “Kathy’s Chic Boutique” will open for business in Owen, in her home at 700 East 7th Street.

The hours of business will be Monday through Friday, with Monday evening being “Men’s” night, from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., and then 8:30 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday, and the hours of 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday.

For Sylvester O’Brien, Withee, July 28, 1978 was the last day of work on the Soo Line Railroad after 35 years of service.

He started at Spencer in 1943 on the Section, working there until 1958. In 1958 he transferred to the Section here in Owen and worked until now, reaching his retirement age of 65.

On July 29, 1978 his family had a Birthday and Retirement Party at his home. Lunch and refreshments were served to relatives, friends, and fellow workers.

Dr. and Mrs. Galen R. Scharer II of 706 E. 6th Street, Owen, Wisconsin are attending the 1978 Homecoming of Palmer College of Chiropractic at Davenport, Iowa.

He is among approximately 4,000 Palmer College alumni, wives and guests who are participating in the educational and social events.

Highlighting the Homecoming activities is the formal opening of the college’s public clinic, a $1 million dollar facility.

Homecoming events also center on the “State of the College” message, delivered by Dr. Galen R. Price, Administrator of Palmer College of Chiropractic.

School: Loyal FFA Finishes 1st in Soil Judging Contest (25 Jul 1978)

Five Future Farmer of America (FFA) teams squared off in the annual Clark County Soil and Water Conservation District Soils Judging Contest. The contest was held July 25 on the Ronald Kitzhaber farm just north of Greenwood.

Loyal’s FFA chapter finished first in the contest, followed by the teams from Neillsville and Greenwood. Other teams participating included a junior team from Neillsville and a team representing the Spencer FFA Chapter.

The Loyal team took top three individual scores in the contest. Steve Wilke finished first, followed closely by Elwood Schiller and Bill Esselman.

Judge for the contest was Soil Scientist, John Langton of Neillsville, Soil Conservation Service Office.

Dan Kallio, son of Mr. and Mrs. Toivo Kallio, who has been employed as Elementary Art Teacher in Barron for the past five years, has resigned from that position, and on August 6, 1978 moved to Houston, Texas, where he accepted a similar position. He will be teaching Elementary Art in a Houston area Magnet School, a school which emphasized music and art, and is attended by students possessing special talents in these areas.
