Shields, Dr. Gregory (6 AUG 1907 – 14 NOV 1968)

Dr. Gregory Shields, 61, Wis. Rapids, physician at the former Country Clinic at Colby, district health officer since 1952, and a long time physician at Abbotsford, died at 7 a.m. today at St. Joseph's Hospital, where he had been a patient since Nov. 6.

Dr. Shield's death was the result of cancer. He had undergone surgery on two occasions.

Funeral services are tentatively set for Friday at Wis. Rapids.

Just previous to this assignment, he was associated with the former County Clinic of Colby.

Dr. Shields was born in Milwaukee Aug. 6, 1907, and graduated from the Marquette University School of Medicine there in 1932. He established his practice in Abbotsford that same year, serving the area until being named district health officer by the State Board of Health, when he moved to Wis. Rapids.

He was married in 1933 to the former Blanche R. Knutson of Westby. His wife is currently a patient in the Family Heritage Nursing Home at Wis. Rapids.

Dr. Shields was president of the Wood County Medical Society in 1962, and was a member of the Wis. Medical Society, the American Medical Association and the Wis. Public Health Association.. He served the latter organization as president in 1961 and 1962. He was also a member of the American Health Association, the Wisconsin Health Council and the American Association of Public Health Physicians.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, Frederick, Lombard, Ill., Mrs. Davis Kurs, Lakehurst, N.J., and Patrick, in the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Marion Greenwald and Mrs. Margaret Pritchard, both of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Jane D. Ashworth, Washington, Ill., a brother, Richard F. Shields, Minneapolis, and four grandchildren.
