Lloyd, Louis A. (? – 28 SEP 1918)

It will be noted from the appended letter that Louis Lloyd, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Lloyd, was a victim of influenza, his death having occurred in an American base hospital at Portsmouth, England, on Sept. 28th. Louis was a fine type of young manhood and his parents have the entire sympathy of all Louis’ many friends in this community. The letter telling of his death is as follows:

Mr. Edward Lloyd, R.F.D. 1,
Columbia, Wis., U.S.A.
Dear Sir—
As the Company Commander, it becomes my sad duty to appraise you of the passing of your son, Louis A. Lloyd, Serial Number 3,751,263. Death occurred at the U.S. Army Base Hospital No. 33, Portsmouth, England, at 7:20 a.m., Sept. 28, 1918, of pneumonia, lobar, acute lower lobe, left, following influenza.

His sacrifice was in the line of duty; and burial, with full military honors, presided over by a disciple of your own church.

Your son had proven himself an excellent soldier, and by the love his comrades bore him, his life shall not have been spent in vain. They will carry on, imbued with his spirit, until war shall have been declared a lasting peace.

Let his comrades and we share with you the sadness of your bereavement, and let us all “carry on” in the right, as God gives us the power to see that right.

Respectfully and sincerely yours,
G. Heineman
