Karlen, Ervin J. (23 SEP 1927 - 17 SEP 2015)

Ervin J. Karlen, 87, Edgar, died Thursday, September 17 at Aspirus Wausau Hospital.

Ervin was born on September 23, 1927, in the Township of Reitbrock, the son of the late Nicholas and Rose Karlen. He married Gertrude 'Nancy' Dahlke on June 6, 1959 at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church, Edgar.

Ervin worked on the farm and in construction with his father. In 1951, he was drafted into the army and served at Bamberg Germany until July 1953. Upon returning he was employed by Joe Burger Construction until 1960. In 1961, Ervin started his own construction business where he built and renovated numerous barns, pole sheds and homes.

In 1997, Ervin 'retired' his business, but continued to work for his son until he was 75. Ervin enjoyed working in his yard cutting lawn and helping Gertrude with the flowers and garden. During the holidays, Ervin and Gertrude were known for decorating their house with so many lights you could see it for miles. They enjoyed traveling, listening to country music and playing sheepshead.

Ervin is survived by his wife Gertrude and their three children: Pat Karlen, Nancy Karlen, and Brian (Jenese) Karlen, all residing in Marathon; three grandchildren: April, Breanne, and Bailey and three great grandchildren: Tucker, Noah, and Aiden. Also surviving is his sister Sylvia Nowacki, Milwaukee.

Preceding him in death are his brother Nicholas Karlen, two sisters, Lucille Hager and Margaret Karlen and his daughter-in-law Becky Karlen.

The funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 21, 2015 at Holy Family Catholic Church, Poniatowski. Rev. Thomas Huff and Deacon Leroy Knauf will preside. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
