Howard, Merwyn (12 APR 1900 - 15 JUL 1957)

Mrs. Alva (Hiles) Howard, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hiles, was born in Merrill on April 12, 1900. The family moved to Tripoli where she resided until 1916. The family then moved to the Pleasant Ridge community in the Town of Grant (Clark Wo., Wis.). Her parents lived in Greenwood (Clark Co.) for a few years, where Mr. Hiles operated the movie theater. The family then moved to Neillsville.

On May 21, 1919 she was united in marriage to Alva Howard at Neillsville and they made their home in the Towno f Grant ever since.

Mrs. Howard was active in religious, Civic and Homemaker organizations. She was a member of the Ladies Aid of her church; the Pleasant Ridge Homemakers Club, the Clark County Homemakers Chorus, president of the Granton Civic Club and at one time an officer of the Clark County Federated Women's Clubs.

Mrs. Howard, who has been ill for some time, underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital, Neillsville, a few weeks ago, passed away there on Monday, July 15, 1957.

Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 18th at 2:00 p.m. from the Zion Lutheran Church, Granton. The Rev. Arthur Oswald, pastor, officiated. Burial was made in the parish cemetery.

She is survived by her husband, a son, Robert, Marshfield; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Otto Hiles, Neillsville, and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter and a brother, Gale Hiles.
