Darnell, Joseph (Joe) L. (4 April 1953 - 11 September 2016) With Flag

Joseph “Joe” L. Darnell, 63, of Withee, passed away on September 11, 2016, at his home, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on April 4, 1953, to James and Laudis (Mosher) Darnell in La Crosse, WI. He proudly served in the United States Army as a paratrooper from 1971-1974. Joe married Mary Anne Munson on November 12, 1977, at Our Lady of Lourdes in Bettendorf, Iowa. Joe was a Master Electrician and worked on the field for 40 years. He also earned his associate’s degree from Chippewa Valley Technical College in Computer Networking.

Joe was a member of St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, Township of Hixon Zoning and Planning, and the Necedah VFW. He loved spending time with his family, fishing, hunting, and playing cards. He enjoyed coaching, refereeing and watching sports, especially baseball. He was a strong, loving person who touched many hearts. He encouraged new challenges and met them head on. He was a leader and remained positive throughout all obstacles in life. An example of this resilience was finishing the 11.8 mile Tough Mudder obstacle course in 2014.

He is survived by the love of his life, wife, Mary; four children: Anna (Steve), Michael, Joseph (Jeni), and Jeremy (Libby); six grandchildren: Chay, Alaina, Ayden, Anya, Aavier, and Grayson; his mother, Laudis; siblings: Sara, Scott (Pam), Cindy (Bill), and George.

Joe was preceded in death by his father, James; twin brother, Jim; and granddaughter, Kyanna.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, September 16, 2016, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church, Thorp, WI, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Janusz Kowalski officiating. Visitation will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2016, at St. Bernard-St. Hedwig Catholic Church from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be held on Friday one hour prior to the service. Military honors will be performed by Necedah VFW.

Joe stated, “My purpose was to know God, to love God, and to serve God, so I may be eternally happy with Him in heaven.”

The family would like to thank: Mayo Clinic Health System Hospice for their wonderful care and support throughout Joes’ journey with Kidney cancer; Father Janusz Kowalski for his spiritual guidance; Dr. Kevin Schultz D.C. for his home visits; Kerry coworkers for their continued friendship, love, and support throughout his journey.

Online condolences may be shared at www.cremationsociety-wi.com.  Stokes, Prock & Mundt Funeral Chapel, Altoona is assisting the family with arrangements.
