Green, Alvin D. “Al” (19 March 1940 – 2 November 2016) With Flag

Al was the second child of Herb and Gladys Green of Humbird. He preschool years were in Humbird, but his parents moved to the Milwaukee area during WWII to secure employment. The family returned to Humbird to resume closer family ties in 1946 when Al was in second grade. Al attended Humbird Grade School and then attended Lincoln High School, Alma Center, from which he graduated in 1958.

As a young child, he was active in learning self-sufficiency by picking strawberries, bean, delivering newspapers, helping on his grandparent’s farm and helping his dad and brothers operate the Humbird Feed Mill, which was a water-powered mill when it was first acquired. Al, like his brothers, enjoyed watching and participating in sporting activities such as baseball and basketball. He became an outstanding point guard for his high school team and an outstanding center fielder for the baseball team. During the summers, he played baseball whenever he had the opportunity.

Upon his high school graduation in 1958, Al decided to enlist in the UI.S. Air Force. He served for over three years at Ent AFB, Colorado Springs with the Air Defense Command in Colorado Springs, CO. His primary occupation was that of a dental technician. It was while he was stationed at Ent that he began his annual walks up to Pikes Peak. Upon completing his four years in the USAF, Al attended UW-River Falls, after which he began his career as a UPS delivery driver in Baldwin, where he completed 20 years of service before resigning in 1983.

Al seemed to make friends easily, and his friends were generally for life. He was a true “gentle” man, always assisting friends and family in any way he could and remembering the little things, like opening doors for ladies and assisting the disabled. He seemed to admire and believe in the “old” ways and courtesies. Al acquired some family land near Humbird where he spent countless hours, weeks and years as an outdoorsman, enjoying the company of fellow hunters and friends at his property. Al later acquired a “snowbird” residence in Coolidge, AZ, where he loved going after his Wisconsin deer season was over. During these years, he played a lot of golf (once winning the Golden Putter Award), bicycled a fair amount, hiked, and also learned to enjoy being a climber.

Al loved fishing in the summers also. He enjoyed fishing in various lakes, rivers and streams in Canada and northern Wisconsin. Fall would find him at his beloved “hunting shack” preparing to bow hunt and the following spring season found him preparing to hunt turkeys.

Al was extremely generous with others, but never dwelled on his kindnesses or generosities. You would only learn about such things from others or if you needed his assistance yourself.

The memory of our brother and friend, Al, will be with us forever and we will all miss him greatly.

Al was preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Gladys and by his brother, Bob.

He is survived by his siblings: Ken (Mary Ann), Sharan Dwyer (Joe), Alice Noyes (Ed), Ralph (Fe), Glen (Lena) and Jeff (Lesa); sister-in-law Clarey Green, and longtime hunting and fishing companion, Richard Washburn.

A Memorial Celebration will be held at the Stokes & Mundt Funeral Chapel & Crematory, 535 S. Hillcrest Parkway, Altoona, WI 54720 at 1 p.m. Saturday Nov. 12, 2016.

The family prefers that, in lieu of flowers, any donations be made to the Town of Mentor Cemetery Association, PO Box 114, Humbird, WI, 54746, or the Humbird Rod & Gun Club, 3057 King Street, Humbird, WI 54746.
