Elwyn was the son of Russell and Nellie Baker of Mazon, IL. He was an active youth, slowed early in life by contracting polio from which he fully recovered. He then worked as a share cropper, and factory worker. Later, he purchased a dairy farm near Neillsville (on River Road). He worked as a Greenskeeper for several golf courses, and as a superintendent at another. He built a sailboat, musical instruments, model airplanes, and two homes. He retired to Arkansas in the 1990s.
