Butkus, Alfons “Alex” D. (25 MAR 1928 - 18 JUL 2017)

Alfons “Alex” D. Butkus, 89, of Medford, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2017 at Care Partners Assisted Living, Medford where he had resided for the past 5 days under the care of Hope Hospice.

Memorial services will be held at 12 noon on Saturday, July 22 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, with Father Phil Juza & Father Dennis Meulemans officiating. Urnbearer is Dennis McCarthy. Interment of his cremated remains will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Cemetery, Medford.

Visitation will take place at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford from 10 AM until the time of services at 12 noon on Saturday, July 22.

Alex was born on March 25, 1928, in the Township of Holway to Dominic and Helen Sophia (Veselefsky) Butkus. He attended Town of Holway elementary schools and was a graduate of Medford High School. On August 25, 1951, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, Alex was married to June Ann Freudenthal.

After his education, he hauled milk, did logging work, farmed in the Town of Holway and worked at the Taylor County Highway Department for 30 years until his retirement in 1990. He enjoyed fishing, ball games, hunting, dancing, his faith, family and friends. He played baseball for the Holway Baseball Team for a number of years. He was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Medford, Medford Knights of Columbus, and was a past member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stetsonville.

Alex is survived by his spouse, June A. Butkus of Medford; children Dale (Donna) Butkus of Owen, Dave “Crocket” (Penny) Butkus of Owen, Lynn Butkus of Medford, Kris (Robert) Ruf of Elkhorn, Scott (Anne) Butkus of Medford; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and sister Helen Strassburger of Curtiss.

He is predeceased by his parents, Dominic and Helen Sophia (Veselefsky) Butkus; and siblings Florence Phillips, John, Walter & Joseph Maldonis.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions to be given to Holy Rosary Church and School, Medford.
