Reed School (Famed Story Master, Jerry Apps to Visit Oct. - 2017)

Famed story master Jerry Apps returns to the Neillsville area with a warm-hearted Apps family anthology at the Reed School Historic Site Sunday, Oct. 29, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

This event, “Cooking Up Memories,” will focus on Apps’ new book, “Old Farm Country Cookbook: Recipes, Menus, and Memories.”

Admission for this event is free and open to the public. For more information, visit www.reedschool.wisconsinhistory.org or call 608-253-3523.

Apps will be joined by his daughter, Susan Apps-Bodilly. They will share the memories that footnote the family recipes in “Old Farm Country Cookbook.”

“Guests will enjoy sampling some of the tasty recipes featured in the cookbook itself and hear some cooking memories first-hand during this event,” noted David Rambow, site director at Reed School.

Apps’ newest publication was inspired by the dishes made by his mother, Eleanor, and features recipes found in her well-worn, Depression Era recipe box. Apps takes readers on a culinary tour of the life on the farm during the Depression and World War II.

Seasoned with personal stories, menus, and family photos, “Old Farm Country Cookbook” recalls a time when electricity had not yet found its way to the farm, when making sauerkraut was a family endeavor and when homemade ice cream tasted better than anything you could buy at the store.

Susan Apps-Bodilly is also the author of “One Room Schools: Stories from the Days of 1 Room,1 Teacher, 8 Grades.” Apps-Bodilly featured Reed School in her book as an example of a one-room country school house in Wisconsin.

Reed School is one of 12 Wisconsin Historical Society Museums and Historic Sites. Reed School is a historic site located in Neillsville.

Reed School, built in 1915, served as a one-room country school through 1951. It provided a first-through eighth-grade education with only one teacher. The school is typical of more than 6,000 one-room schools that dotted the landscape of rural Wisconsin. For more information, visit www.reedschool.wisconsinhistory.org.
