Schade, Alfred (1878? – 30 January 1975)

A 96-year-old Town of Sherwood man, Alfred Schade, Rt. 1, Pittsville, became Clark County’s second traffic fatality when he died Thursday morning, January 30, of injuries sustained on a two-vehicle collision Tuesday afternoon, January 28.

The crash occurred on County Trunk W in the Town of Lynn. According to the report, Schade, who was a passenger in an auto driven by his wife Adelien, sustained a “trauma to the right side of the head.” He was taken to Memorial Hospital by Ambulance.

Larry A. Wolf, Rt. 2 Marshfield, driver of the other vehicle, told authorities that he applied brakes to stop for a stop sign (on a town road) and was unable to do so because of the icy roadway. Wolf tried to steer into the ditch, but his truck slid onto the road and into the path of the northbound Schade sedan, colliding with it broadside. Wolf received head and hand injuries.

Funeral services for Schade were held Monday from the Pittsville Evangelical Free Church, with burial following in the Town of Sherwood Cemetery.
