The graduating class of 1946 of Withee High School held at 25th anniversary on
Saturday evening, June 26, 1971, at Meadowview Country Club.
The evening began with a social hour at 7:30, with dinner being served at 8:00
p.m. There were 20 members and their spouse present. Former teachers present
were Mr. and Mrs. Curtiss Hugill and Mr. and Mrs. Virgil Held.
Frank Ogurek was Master of Ceremonies. Class Willw as read by Evenly Jasmer
Wall. Charlotte Buchanan Andreasen read the Class Prophecy. The teachers present
commented on some of the teaching highlights of 25 years ago. With a shortage of
teachers during war time they were often pressed into duty for which they were
not prepared, resulting in some trying times, as well as some humorous ones.
Class members gave a brief summary of the past 25 years. Mary Zawacki Ogurek
read a poen in memoriam of Ray Smith, the only deceased calls member. Prizes
were awarded to the one from the longest distance – Evelyn Steager Kamm,
Ketchikan, Alaska; the man with the largest waist – Arvo Salo; a three way tie
resulted when the girl with the smallest waist was sought – they were Charlotte
Buchanan Andreasen, Josephine Vrkijan Linders, and Mary Loris Stewart Heinke;
the person with the most gray ahir – Irvin Tomkowski; the most boys – Lorraine
Freitag King, and the most girls – Frank and Mary Zawacki Ogurek; the most
grandchildren – Roselyn Vandeberg, Hansen, and the first reservation was sent by
Barbara Fischer Stoiber. Harry Bruckslager and Irvin Tomkowiak were elected
co-chairmen for the reunion to be held in 1976. Remainder of the evening was
spent getting reacquainted with the group.
