Hayes, Phillip Leroy (20 FEB 1924 - 15 DEC 2005)

Phillip L. Hayes, 81, of Cornell passed away Thursday, December 15, at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Chippewa Falls.

He was born the son of Leslie and Florence (King) Hayes February 20, 1924, in Jim Falls and grew up in the Popple Lake area. He entered the Army in 1942, at age 18. He was shipped overseas where he landed in North Africa and fought his way through Southern France including the invasion of Normandy and the Battle of The Bulge. Phillip earned several medals for gallantry in action and was a staff sergeant and squadron leader supervising the activities of 12 men in combat. He was honorably discharged February 18, 1946.

After leaving the service Phillip married Ruth Winchell in Chippewa Falls. They farmed most of their lives before retiring.

He was the beloved father of Steven (Delores) Hayes of Boyceville and Linda (Gary)Weggen of Cornell. He is further survived by his wife Ruth; his loving grandchildren; and great-grandchildren who were the joy of his life, Joshua Weggen, Lisa (James) Suckow and their children Madison and Emmett, John (Tammy) Weggen and their children John Jr., Trina, Jarryd, Savannah & McKenzie, Jason (Angie) Weggen and their children, Cody, Kelsey and Jaiden, Jessica (Tye) Larson and their children Kayla and Kirsten. He is also survived by his sisters, Cecilia Barsaimian of Chippewa Falls, Delores Sippy of Jim Falls, LaVonne Sippy and Sandy Collum of Chippewa Falls, Jane Hoel of Stanley, Sue Yohnk of Cadott, and Luanne Denning of Chippewa Falls; three brothers, David of Virginia, Stanley of Jim Falls and Ben of Cadott.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Gene; and grandson, Brent.
