Haavisto, Hilja (1885? - 17 JUL 1974)

Mrs. John (Hilja) Haavisto, 89, passed away yesterday, Wednesday, July 17, 1974 at 12:00 at Victory Memorial Hospital, Stanley. She had been a patient at the Havenet Nursing Home in Owen (Clark Co., Wis.) for a number of years.

Funeral services are pending from the Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home, and are tentatively set for 1 p.m., Friday, July 19, 1974.

Mrs. John (Hilja) Haavisto, Owen, died at 12:06 p.m. Wednesday, July 17, 1974 at Victory Memorial Hospital in Stanley. She was 89 years of age, and had been a resident for the past seven years at the Havenet Nursing Home at Owen. The Rev. Warren Behling conducted the services at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kraut-Maurina Funeral Home, Owen. Burial was made in the Riverside Cemetery, Withee.

Serving as pallbearers were Cameron Simon, Dale Simon, Warring Menning, William Kangas, George Eloranta, and Edwin Eloranta.

The former Hilja Saarinoja was born May 23, 1885 in Vaasan Land, Finland, and came in 1903 to the United States, setting in Ely, Minnesota. Her marriage in 1905 at Ely, Minnesota was to John Haavisto, who preceded her in death September 8, 1937.

The couple moved to a farm in the town of Beaver (Clark Co., Wis.) in 1912, and later moved to a farm in the town of Longwood (Clark Co.). In 1948, she came to Owen,a nd for the past seven years had been a resident of the Havenet Nursing Home here.

She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Owen, of which she and her husband were some of the original founders.

Surviving are two sons, Albert and Eino, both of Owen; four daughters, Mrs. George (Laura) Hasek, La Mesa, California; Mrs. Helen Simon, Owen; Mrs. Alma Roberts, Madison, and Mrs. William (Laine) Strand, San Diego, California; a sister, Hilma Maaenpaa, Finland; 17 grandchildren, and 33 great-grandchildren.

Thos attending from out of town were Mrs. George Hasek, La Mesa, California; Mr. and Mrs. Cameron Simons and daughter, Medina, Ohio; Mr. and Mrs. Dale Simon, Marshfield; Miss Corrine Simon, Milwaukee; Mr. Gerald Haavito, Marshfield, and Miss Jean Haavisto17, Wausau.
