Legion to Honor Veteran Wulff (Wulff – 2019)

Legion to Honor Veteran Wulff

Terry Wulff, a local veteran, will be one of two honored by the Neillsville Legion during a potluck.

Wulff was born in Eau Claire. He attended Boyd Grade School and graduated in 1965 from Eau Claire Memorial High School. During high school, he worked at a Holiday gas station.

In May 1965, Wulff joined the Navy. He went to boot camp at Great Lakes in Illinois. He attended gunners mate school and volunteered for patrol boat river duty. He was sent to San Diego, California, and attended a counterinsurgency Vietnamese language school, and a boat school for three weeks. He was also sent to a mock prisoner-of-war camp.

Upon graduation, Wulff was sent to the Philippines for jungle survival school. He was then sent to Saigon, Vietnam, to Squadron 543, and later was transferred to River Section 521. He served as a forward Gunner and was at the 1968 offense in Hue supporting the Marines, with suppressing fire, when they would cross the bridge to retake Hue.

The last 30 days of Wulff’s deployment were spent in the gun shop repairing machine guns and grenade launchers for boats.

Wulff was sent to the USS Guyette Destroyer where he served as a second-class gunners mate.

That ship was retired a year later, and he was sent to the USS Borie, another destroyer. He received the same rank but was also the lead petty officer for the second division in charge of maintenance and training the reserves.

Wulff was discharged in August 1972. He attended Chippewa Valley Technical College under the GI Bill and received an associate degree in advertising and marketing.

He worked as a sales agent, and was a co-owner of PI Inc., a publishing company. He also worked as a bartender near Clintonville. Then he bought his own bar, which he ran for 17 years, at Cloverleaf Lakes. Wulff also worked as a family counselor in child care.

Wulff also worked in real estate and opened Sunrise Real Estate in Neillsville. He has been in business for 25 years. He is still active in it but is training people to eventually take it over and buy the business.

Wulff was married to his wife, Kathy, in 1973.
