Tufts, Lamont (First Born in Jail Residence - 1976)

The first born in the present Clark County Jail has indicated a willingness to “send a check” for the preservation of this historic old building.

He is Lamont Tufts of St. Joseph, Mi. Mr. Tufts was born in the residential part of the jail to Sheriff and Mrs. William S. Tufts. The latter Mr. Tufts was prominent in early days of Withee, arriving there in 1878. He entered into the mercantile business there in 1882, was interested in farming and ran a sawmill seven miles north of Withee.

In addition to these activities, he was one of the organizers of the State Bank of Withee, and one of its directors. He also served at one time as chairman of his town board and a member of the Withee School board.

Lamont Tufts expressed interest in the current move to preserve the old Clark County Jail in response to a letter to Mrs. Jennie Tufts, wife of the late W.B. (Bill) Tufts. She has sent to him a copy of The Clark County Press containing a picture of the building and a story telling about high school students spearheading a movement to “save the
