Helfert, Nicholas (6 January 1921-7 January 1981)

DORCHESTER-- Nicholas Helfert, 60, Route 1, died Wednesday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

According to marv Nelles, Marathon County coronoer, the victim was last seen at 9:30 that morning and found about 1 P.M. near a woodpile on the farm of his brother, Joseph.

The funeral will be Friday at Maurina Funeral Home, Abbotsford.

Mr. Helfert was born January 6, 1921 in Dorchester. On April 30, 1946 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Stetsonville. He married Beatrice Cypher.

He farmed in the town of Holton. He was a World War II U.S. Army veteran.

He was a member of St. Louis Catholic Church; Men's Order of Catholic Foresters; Leach-Paulson American Legion Post at Dorchester; president of Farmer's Union Co-op of Medford, on the board of directors of Taylor County Electric Co-op; member of Dairyland Power Co-op of La Crosse; and a member of Dorchester Coopertaive.

Surviving are his wife; five daughters. Mrs. Robert (Connie) Ericson of Hutchinson, Minnesota, Mrs. James (Delores) Lucas of Bloomington, Minnesota, Mrs. Michael (Jean) Ericson of St. Paul, Minnesota, Mrs. Leonard (Marie) Haas of Colby and Mrs. Scott (Dorothy) Ericson of Dorchester; three sons, Michael and James, both of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and Gerald of Dorchester; two brothers, Joe of Dorchester and Paul of Athens; three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Bartnik of Colby, and Mrs. Rudy (Marie) Kugel and Mrs. Ted (Cecelia) Schmidt, both of Abbotsford; and 11 grandchildren. Two brothers are deceased.
