GREENWOOD -- The athletic department of the Greenwood Community High School
recognized various athletes last week in the East Gym.
The current ball teams of both the boys and the girls were introduced and
highlights of the season were given by the coach.
The conference volleyball trophy was presented to the school by coach Judy
Tetzner.
Wayne Benson, athletic director, gave recognition to the two Cloverbelt
Conference athletes, Judy Klinke and Doug Slough were cited for receiving the
Marshfield News-Herald student athletic awards.
This is the first year in which the scholastic-athletic reserve award was
presented by the U.S. Army Reserve. Staff Sgt. Don Ormes, Medford, made the
presentation to Larry Sloniker and Judy Klinke. They were nominated by the
school faculty. The awards are not reserved for seniors, but for athletes who
excel in scholarship first, then in sports.
Students who have earned letter in at least two sports, participated in extra
curricular activities and attained scholastic achievement were selected by the
faculty. They are Diane Speich and Larry Sloniker.
The Don Plautz award to the deserving senior was earned by Jeanette Abel.
Tim Huffman, pinch hitter for the featured speaker, gave some highlights in the
field of football and the Green Bay Packers. Coming from a football family, he
had not been confronted with some of the problems facing the average college
student in athletics. He compared the pro and college football players noting
that you cannot be fired from a college team but you can from a professional
team. Then there also is a difference of pay.
