Schiller, Robert W. “Dubs” (19 July 1914 – 18 August 1978) With Flag

A former, many-termed Clark County Clerk of Court, Robert W. “Dubs” Schiller, died Monday, August 18, of an apparent heart attack while cutting wood in the Town of Hewett. Mr. Schiller, of 506 West Fourth St., Neillsville, was 66, at the time of his death.

According to Clark County Coroner, Robert Lulloff, Schiller had been cutting wood in an area just west of the Wildcat Inn on Monday. His wife became worried when he did not return home for lunch and she contacted a neighbor, Kenneth Short, to begin a search for him. Short found the body at 3:00 p.m.

Schiller was born on July 19, 1914, in Neillsville, to William F. and Rose (Barton) Schiller. He received his primary education in Montana and moved back to Neillsville at the age of fourteen with his parents. He graduated from Neillsville High School and then attended St. Thomas College, St. Paul, Minnesota, for two years.

Neillsville returned to Neillsville where he worked with his father at the Schiller Funeral Home. After the death of his father, he continued to operate the funeral home. It was during this time that he married Natalee Sloup in September 4, 1937, in West Allis ceremonies.

Schiller entered the service in October of 1940 and served in the South Pacific. He held the rank of major when he was discharged on December 23, 1945. He returned to Neillsville after the war and managed the merchants Hotel and being elected Clark County Clerk of Courts. He held that post until three years ago when he failed in a re-election bid.

He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and the Wilson-Heintz VFW Post of Neillsville.

Surviving him, besides his wife, are three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Carol) Belknap of Eau Claire, Mrs. Robert (Jill) Pernsteiner of Big Bend and Janet Greenfield; two brothers, Joseph of Roseville, Mn., and William of Port Washington; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services were to be held today (Thursday, August 21) at 10:30 a.m. from St. Mary’s with the Rev. Joseph Henseler officiating. Burial was to be made in the parish cemetery; the Gesche Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. (Visitation was slated for Wednesday evening, with a rosary service at 8:00 p.m. and visitation continuing on Thursday morning until time of the service.)
