Clark Co. Historical Society Meets (Curtiss - 1978)

In seeking new areas in which to meet, the Clark County Historical Society marked a first time in Curtiss recently when it met at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Among items for discussion was the Colby Flea Market, set for the following Saturday. During and after the meeting, a number of members volunteered to help with the stand and also at the Rural Museum which was open during the day.

A previewing of the Fine Arts Museum, to be established in the 1897 Clark County Jail, was brought up. It was decided to have a “before look” to gain information as to items in storage, display cases, etc. a letter to the Listeman Foundation from County Board Chairman and Chairman of the Public Property Committee, H.H. Quicker, was read noting that the lease date was given as “about September 15” but a definite time was not stated. The preview is to help make progress in setting up displays. It was also decided to have an open house for the new museum in conjunction with the open house for the new Courthouse addition, on a date which has not been set.

Florence Garbush, president, briefly reviewed the Northwestern Council for Local History meeting held at Spooner in August. The Council received the report that the Rural Museum at Colby had been open for tours of several school groups, Homemakers Clubs and a study club. (Clubs or groups may request four times by writing or phoning Myrle Meacham, 522 North Second St., Colby, phone 223-2759 or Florence Garbush, Rt. 2, Loyal, Phone 255-8968.)

Brian Bushnell talked on he proposed structure to be built for the Unified Service Adult Development Center in Greenwood. He asked for any information members could offer as to the historical values at the construction location in southeastern Greenwood. The Society receives similar requests at time of highway relocation, construction, etc.

The Dorchester and Curtiss members provided the lunch served during the social hour. The October 5 meeting will be held in the cafeteria (South side door) of the Neillsville High School.
