On Saturday, July 17, a stone placement ceremony was held at The Highground Veterans Memorial Park near Neillsville. Family and friends came to honor Arthur H. Scheel of Greenwood.

Scheel served in the U.S. Navy from Nov. 21, 1945 to Oct. 11, 1947. He served on the U.S.S. Appalachian, achieving the rank of QM3 and receiving the Victory Medal.

Art Scheel was born in the Town of Beaver. As a farm hand, he joined the Navy at the age of 22.

Following his service and an honorable discharge, Scheel acquired a dairy farm at W4657 153 Rd., Greenwood. He married a local gal in 1949 and farmed until 1974. Scheel traveled in southern Wisconsin.

He purchased a hog farm in the Mound area of Neillsville. He retired and lived in Greenwood for the remainder of his life.

The Highground Veterans Park and Camp Victory is a 456-acre veterans memorial park and retreat located in the hills of Central Wisconsin, founded in 1984 with a mission to honor, educate and heal.
