Granton Model Bridge (Judging - 1979)
The College of Engineering of UW-Platteville sponsored, its eighth annual model
bridge span contest, March 30-31, and the CAPSTONE drafting class of Granton
High School, under the instruction of Ron Grinnell, participated with several
honored.
Tony Wolf, a Granton student, qualified for regional competition.
The object of the contest is to construct a structural model capable of spanning
20 inches made from a given amount of wood and glue. Each model was tested to
determine its load-carrying capacity as related to its weight. The model
demonstrating the highest load-carrying capacity per unit weight was declared
the best entry.
The Granton CAPSTONE class entered ten bridges, with the five students in the
class each making two models for the competition. With 767 bridges being tested
in the senior high division, the Granton students’ models, tested to show the
following results:
Tony Wolf, second, 615 load, 6033 ratio; Denis Carteron, 13th, 1,000 load, 4877
ratio; Francis Goergen, 18th, 846 load, 4706 ratio; Tom Hasz, 58th, 446 load,
3253 ratio; Joe Garbisch, 71st, 569 load, 2988 ratio.
Because Tony Wolf placed in the top three entries at the contest, he is eligible
to enter a national bridge contest, to be held at the Illinois Institute of
Technology, Chicago, June 25, with regional winners being represented from
throughout the United States.
