Slock, Louis (? – 23 November 1979)

Louis Slock, 70, emeritus faculty member at UW-Eau Claire and former Clark County School Supervisor, died Friday, November 23, in Eau Claire of natural causes. Final rites were held Monday, November 26, at Eau Claire Lake Street United Methodist Church, with Rev. David Kruse officiating. The Fuller Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Slock is survived by his widow, Cora, of the home at 2616 Clark Place; by a son, Chuck and a daughter, Rachel, and four grandchildren.

Slock, who retired from UW-Eau Claire in 1974, joined the university’s faculty in 1944 as instructor in rural education. During his last ten years at UW-Eau Claire, Slock held a unique joint appointment as director of extension and assistant professor in the department of community affairs of UW-Extension, serving 22 counties of northwestern Wisconsin.

He organized off-campus Extension programs in education and social work offered through Extension in north central Wisconsin by UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee campuses.

Slock was known to many as executive secretary-treasurer of the Eau Claire State College and University Alumni Association during a ten-year period, 1959-1969.

Slock served as director of Extension for UW-EC from 1950 until he received his joint appointment. He also served the university in many other positions: from 1944 to 1947 as instructor in rural education, originating the use and teaching of audiovisual education at the university, from 1947 to 1952, principal of the Campus Laboratory School from 1953 to 1954, acting director of placement; from 1954-1960, director of rural education and from 1960-1964 director of liberal arts placement.

Slock received his bachelor’s degree in education from UW-Stevens Point. He was a rural and elementary school teacher and a high school principal and then superintendent of schools in Clark County before joining the UW-Eau Claire faculty. He earned the M.S. degree from the University of Minnesota and completed additional graduate work at Minnesota and the University of Colorado.

Slock served as executive secretary of the Northwestern Wisconsin Education Association from 1948 until after he retired. He was president of the Association for Field Services in Teaching Education in 1959, and he was a member of other professional groups in education. He also was a past president and board member of the Eau Claire Exchange Club.
