Two sisters were killed early Tuesday morning, January 1, 1974 in the city of Owen limits when the vehicle they were riding in was struck by a Soo Line Freight train.
Joann, 7, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital in Marshfield, and Ann, 10, died during the day following he accident, which occurred about 10:25 a.m.
They were the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Laube, route 1, Owen.
Two other sisters, Barbara, 17, the drive of the car, and Mary K., 13, are still in critical condition. It was also reported their brother, Dale, 15, was taken off the critical list Tuesday evening, and is now considered seriously injured.
It was reported that the Laube children were returning from church, going south on County Highway D when struck by the northbound Soo Line Freight train. The impact carried the Laube car within 100 feet of the Owen First Station, located on Highway X.
The unguarded crossing was noted to be slippery at spots from ice and snow that morning.
Two ambulances from Owen and a station wagon transferred the accident victims from the scene.
