Hake, Elsie (28 Dec 1927 – 13 Jan 2022)

Elsie Hake, age 94, of Chatfield, Minn. (formerly of Curtiss) died on Jan. 13, 2022.

A celebration of life will be held later this year in Wisconsin.

Elsie Neumann was born on Dec. 28, 1927, in the German settlement of Bessarabia, Romania; the daughter of Frederich and Sophia (Lutz) Neumann. During WWII she and her family migrated from Romania to West Germany. She entered the United States via Ellis Island in 1952 and became a citizen on Aug. 26, 1958. She lived and worked in Chicago until she met and married Roland Hake in 1961 in Withee.

Roland and Elsie were dairy farmers in the town of Green Grove (Clark Co.) for many years, owning a Century Farm. Elsie was a farmer, a gardener and was known for her immaculately mowed lawn. Over the years family members would enjoy an annual hayride and a Big Max pumpkin etched with their name on it, grown by Elsie. Working in her garden and in her many flowerbeds planted throughout her yard was a source of great satisfaction for her. Elsie was also an amazing cook and kept her home in immaculate condition. She was a proud member of the Deutscher Club in Greenwood and loved to play cards. After her husband’s death in 2005, Elsie built a home near the farm and resided there until moving near her daughter in Rice Lake. Elsie had recently moved to Minnesota to be near her eldest daughter. Her greatest joy in life came from her role of being “Oma” to her four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Elsie is survived by her daughters: Ramona (Kevin) Back of Dover, Minn., and Donna (Brian) Schultz of Rice Lake; grandchildren: Emily (Ryan) Adel of Dover, Minn., Amanda (fiancé’ John Hassel) Back of Milwaukee, Alexandra (Luke) Chilson of Rice Lake and Jack Schultz of Rice Lake. She is further survived by three great-grandchildren: Eli, Carl and Mollie; and many special nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 2005; her sisters: Hulda and Klara; one brother, Fred; and a great-granddaughter, Grace Adel.

Schad and Zabel Funeral Home in Eyota, Minn., is assisting with arrangements.
