Conrad Orth, Colby, a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Community Activities Committee, participated in the Veterans of Foreign Wars annual Mid-Winter Conference of National Officers and Department Commanders held this week. He attended the VFW. committee meetings and participated in briefings by government and military leaders over the weekend.

Monday, Conference delegates, headed by Commander-in-Chief Patrick E. Carr, of Metairie, Louisiana, appeared before the Senate Veterans Affairs Committee.

Tuesday the VFW. leaders and state winners of the VFW. Voice of Democracy program, a broadcast script writing contest, will appear before the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and later meet with their respective Congressional Delegations.

The Congressional Banquet Tuesday evening will highlight the Conference, Senator John Stennis (Mississippi), Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, will receive the tenth annual VFW. Congressional Award at the dinner “for outstanding service to the nation.” It is expected that the award will be presented to Stennis in absentia.

Approximately 2,500 persons will attend the formal banquet, including Congressmen, Supreme Court Justices, military leaders and senior government officials.

Winner of the Voice of Democracy contest, will receive $10,000 scholarship, will be announced and deliver a winning script on “My Responsibility To Freedom” at the banquet. The dinner will be the final event of the five-day VFW. conference.
