Wilson, Newell (25 Jul 1917 – 26 Mar 1978)

Newell (Mickey) Wilson, age 60, former Owen Postmaster, died in his Owen home early Sunday morning, March 26, 1978.

Funeral services were held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 29 at Nazareth Lutheran Church in Withee, with the Rev. Lloyd Yaggie officiating. Burial followed in River Cemetery, Withee, where the O-W VFW Post 9007 conducted military rites. Services were provided by the Maurina Funeral Home in Owen.

Pallbearers were Paul Fricke, Toivo Makinen, Claude, Floyd and Lloyd Wilson, and Vernon Capes.

Mr. Wilson was born and reared in Owen, Wisconsin, where he made his home. Born on July 25, 1917, he attended school in Owen and graduated from Owen High School in 1936.

A veteran of World War II, Mr. Wilson served with the U.S. Air Corps, and was a member of the Owen-Withee Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9007.

He married the former Helga Makinen on September 26, 1945 in Owen. He was employed by the Owen Post Office, and then in 1971 became postmaster, retiring from that position in 1976.

Mickey was an avid hunter, going yearly deer hunting at the Wilson cabin at High Bridge, and he also was a good cook, preparing much of the game food. At home he and his wife did gardening, and he loved to can, especially dill pickles. He was a golfer and a member of the Meadowview Country Club. Another hobby of his was rock collecting. In front of his home he built a wall with some of the rock inlaid, which he cut and polished.

He was a member of Nazareth Lutheran Church.

Surviving are his wife; two sons, George Wilson of Owen, and David Wilson of Dayton, Ohio; three brothers, Claude and Floyd of Owen, and Lloyd of Spalding, Michigan; one sister, Mrs. Vernon (Bertha) Capes of West Bend, and two granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.
