NHS Graduates (Scholarships - 1982)

Two Neillsville High School graduates have each earned $500 scholarships under a new program announced by the Neillsville Bank.

Debbie Elmhorst, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Elmhorst, Rt. 4 Neillsville, and June Christie, 311 East Second St., Neillsville, were the scholarship winners.

The awards, known as the Herman North Centennial Scholarship and William Campman Centennial Scholarship, were announced by Janet Pree, vice president of the Neillsville Bank. Janet, the daughter of the late Herman North, said, “We wanted to institute this program of two scholarships annually for the first time this year because it is the centennial year of the Neillsville community. It is our intention to continue this program in the years to come.”

Debbie Elmhorst received the Herman North Scholarship. She plans on attending District I Technical Institute in Eau Claire and will study accounting. Her award was presented by Gordon Vine, agricultural loan officer for the bank, at the high school’s annual awards day.

The North scholarship is named after Herman North, former president of the bank, who retired in 1972 at the age of 91. He was affiliated with the bank for 70 years.

June Christie received the Campman scholarship. She plans on attending UW-Eau Claire. Her award was presented by Cara Jean Gress, granddaughter of William Campman.

The Campman scholarship is in honor of William Campman, who is now 103 and a resident of the Neillsville Memorial Home. Campman, the last known Wisconsin survivor of the Spanish-American War, served as legal counsel and a director of the Neillsville Bank for more than half a century.
